*’Northumberland’ was the previously listed county; it included Newcastle upon Tyne until 1400, and expanded greatly in the Tudor period. Tynemouth and other settlements in North Tyneside (including Willington) were transferred to Tyne and Wear in 1974 under the Local Government Act of 1972.
